We are often asked this question by customers who live close to a major road or railway line that suffer from the noise generated invading their living space.
It is only in recent years that triple glazing has been added to the product ranges of most home improvement specialists as previously it would only be utilised in extremely cold countries.
Escalating energy costs led to it being more readily called for in the UK because of its perceived enhanced thermal efficiency, plus there was the widely-held conception that it provides excellent noise insulation, but is that necessarily true?
Here are the facts about triple glazing in relation to energy efficiency and noise…
When UPVC triple glazing has a U-value of 1.0 W/m²k it will be 40% more thermally efficient than standard “A” rated double glazing and 60% more thermally efficient than standard “C” rated double glazing.
Whether triple glazing can prevent noise penetration more than double glazing is however debatable.
Many moons ago, scientists uncovered that sound journeys through a solid more easily than it does through air. Therefore, for the glass inserted into a window to be capable of preventing noise from passing through it you need to have glazing of different thicknesses. This subsequently means that when the glass and any cavities are of the same thickness, any reduction in noise will be minimal. You need the correct sealed unit for it to have a noticeable impact.
Triple glazing is still worthwhile though!
Don’t rule out triple glazing just because it’s noise insulating properties possibly aren’t as significant as some people make out.
• As we’ve said earlier, it does provide exceptional thermal efficiency and that’s exactly what you require ahead of the winter months if you experience coldness in your interior when the weather is at its worst.
• Investing in triple glazing will save you lots of money on energy bills in the long-term.
• It will often only cost slightly more than double glazing which as highlighted cannot compete when it comes to reducing your dependency on energy.
• Increasing the thickness of a window with an extra pane of glass will also help make your home more secure.
