Travel agents and bookers across the land will be rubbing their hands with glee as Britons start to plan their annual summer holidays. It is just as an exciting time for those anxious for a break to somewhere hot and exotic, though some people may be heading away from Blighty with a little trepidation, worried about their home lying empty for a week or two.
Anyone taking to the skies for sunnier climes needs to be able to do it with confidence and you should be able to when you take out the following security checks prior to flying:
Go round every single window and door in the house and make sure that they are fully closed and properly locked and then check them once more. If you have a garage or garden shed then similarly ensure that the lock is in the closed position.
All homes should be equipped with an alarm system so that any break-in attempt alerts those who live around you. Give it a few tests before you depart until you are absolutely certain that it is in good working order.
Whilst we wouldn’t recommend that you leave the landing light on for the duration of your holidays and waste needless energy, it would be prudent to invest in a security light for the front and rear of the house that comes on when someone approaches it. This could deter any potential intrusion.
“Neighbours, everybody needs good neighbours”.
Pass on a house key to a neighbour who you trust and ask them to open and draw the curtains in the morning and last thing at night. Tell them to also put any post out of sight as leaving it on the doorstep will be a giveaway that there’s nobody at home.
Replacing any old windows and doors is a MUST too! Get them from your nearest dealer.
