The Shard may soon have to share the title of being the tallest skyscraper in London after the unveiling of a proposed new skyscraper called 1 Undershaft.
If given the green light, the 73-storey building will measure 309.6 metres tall to comply with maximum height restrictions in the city, making it the exact same height as the Shard.
At the very top of the structure will be a free public viewing gallery so that visitors can get a spectacular vantage point of the skyline. It will also include enough office space for 10,000 employees, a restaurant, and an education centre for visiting schools. Underneath the skyscraper will be a public square in the architect’s attempts to create “a building where the public are put first”.
Sat between the 180m high Gherkin and 224m high Cheesegrater in the heart of the financial district, it has been created by architect Eric Parry and will directly face-off against the Shard on the other side of the water.
A planning application is set to be submitted to the relevant authority early next year.
