Following the announcement of David Cameron a few days ago that he would force energy suppliers to offer their customers the cheapest possible tariff available to them, the energy regulator Ofgem has thrown its weight behind the proposals.
Plans include limiting the energy tariffs offered for gas and electricity down to four per company and making their packages far more transparent so that there is a better understanding of tariffs amongst consumers. If the plans are given the green light they could come into force by as soon as next summer though Ofgem is suggesting that there is nothing to stop energy companies from implementing the changes earlier.
This will come as great news to the estimated 6 million households who currently find themselves living in fuel poverty, which is classified as spending more than 10 per cent of your monthly outgoings on energy bills. Many of these people are in this situation simply because they are paying more for their energy than they need to be so these proposals should help.
Whilst we wait to see whether these plans come to fruition, homeowners should still be trying to find out whether they can secure a fairer energy package before winter arrives. First-time switchers could save up to 300 pounds just by changing firms.
